Watch online « Safe », Cannes 2013 Short Film Palme d’Or

Jeudi Movie column of 30th May on Inside Corea.

The most interesting Korean film you can watch with subtitles this week is no more no less than this year’s Cannes Film Festival Short Film Palme d’Or. Because as strange as it may seems, the film is shown online below. Safe is the work of a the very gifted Moon Byoung-gon 문병곤, graduated from Jungang University in Seoul and already made three short films. The second one, Finis Operis, had already been invited in the Cannes Film Festival sidebar Critic’s Week in 2011.

safeSafe tells how a college girl is trapped into a gloomy small job, cashier in an illegal gambling joint, which is stinging the poor clients, who end up in getting angry. The film has been described here and there as “realistic” but, on the contrary, it gives a very excessive image of Korea. It can be almost considered as an horror film and we can even point out some heavy sides in the image and effects. We also notice that the films where a psychopath handles a hammer, such as here one again, seems like a symbol of Korea (Oldboy, The Chaser…). Anyway it’s a genre that foreign countries enjoy. Except we never heard of any psychopath with a hammer in Korea, but whatever. Anyway, Safe is undoubtedly a very well crafted film.
